Italy: A Month of Tradition and Community

The Feast of Saint John (Festa di San Giovanni)

Celebrated on June 24, the Feast of Saint John honors Saint John the Baptist, the patron saint of several Italian cities, including Florence and Turin. The festivities often include religious processions, music, cultural events, and spectacular fireworks.

In Florence, locals gather along the Arno River to enjoy an evening of celebration that combines centuries-old traditions with modern festivities.

Infiorata Festivals

San Valentino non è soltanto una ricorrenza dedicata agli innamorati, ma un momento sospeso in cui parole e immagini si intrecciano per dare forma ai sentimenti più profondi. È il giorno in cui la poesia incontra l’arte, e insieme raccontano l’amore in tutte le sue sfumature: passione, nostalgia, attesa, promessa.

Dalla tradizione italiana fino alle voci internazionali, l’amore è sempre stato il grande protagonista della creazione artistica. Dante Alighieri ha trasformato il suo amore per Beatrice in un viaggio eterno tra cielo e terra, mentre Pablo Neruda ha saputo dare voce a un sentimento ardente e terreno, capace di parlare a ogni generazione. Nei versi di William Shakespeare, l’amore diventa dramma e destino, fragile e potente allo stesso tempo.

Anche nell’arte visiva, l’amore trova la sua espressione più intensa. Pensiamo al celebre bacio dipinto di Francesco Hayez: un’immagine che è diventata simbolo universale di passione e romanticismo. La Pastiera Napoletana: Il Dolce di Pasqua per Eccellenza

La pastiera napoletana, considerata simbolo di rinascita, è un altro dolce tradizionale che si prepara a Pasqua. Sembra che la sua ricetta si sia originata intorno al 1500 nella città di Napoli, in Campania. Nel corso degli anni la ricetta ha subito varie modifiche.

In seguito al suo elegante aspetto e squisitezza, la pastiera è considerata la regina dei dolci pasquali. La pastiera non è difficile da preparare in casa. Di forma circolare è composta da una base di pasta frolla e un ripieno di grano cotto, ricotta, zucchero, uova, latte, burro e arancia candita. L’immancabile aroma di fiori d’arancio le conferisce un profumo delicato e invitante. La superficie di questo dolce è decorata con strisce di pasta sistemate diagonalmente. Durante la cottura, nell’aria si diffonde un profumo indescrivibile. La pastiera viene servita a temperatura ambiente spolverata con dello zucchero a velo.

Passare tempo in cucina è divertente e terapeutico.

La pastiera napolitana, considerada un símbolo de renacimiento, es otro pastel tradicional de Pascua. Su receta parece tener su origen hacia 1500 en la ciudad de Nápoles, Campania. A lo largo de los años, la receta ha sufrido diversas modificaciones.

Por su aspecto elegante y su exquisitez, la pastiera está considerada la reina de los postres de Pascua. La pastiera no es difícil de preparar en casa. De forma circular, consta de una base de masa quebrada y un relleno de trigo cocido, requesón, azúcar, huevos, leche, mantequilla y naranja confitada. El aroma siempre presente de la flor de azahar le confiere una fragancia delicada y acogedora. La superficie de este pastel se decora con tiras de pasta dispuestas en diagonal. Durante la cocción, una fragancia indescriptible recorre el aire. La pastiera se sirve a temperatura ambiente espolvoreada con azúcar en polvo.

Pasar tiempo en la cocina es divertido y terapéutico.

The Neapolitan pastiera, considered a symbol of rebirth, is another traditional dessert made at Easter. It seems that its recipe originated around 1500 in the city of Naples, Campania. Over the years, the recipe has undergone various modifications.

Il Duomo della Cattedrale di Firenze (1420-36), è stato realizzato dal grande Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446). La più grande volta del mondo, maestosamente domina la città di Firenze. L’arte geniale del Brunelleschi consiste nell’aver applicato il principio geometrico della prospettiva agli edifici. La struttura nella sua apparenza esteriore rivela armonia di forme, chiarezza spaziale, e raffinatezza dei particolari decorativi.

The Duomo of Florence Cathedral (1420-36), was built by the great Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446). The largest vault in the world, it majestically dominates the city of Florence. Brunelleschi’s genius art consists in having applied the geometric principle of perspective to buildings. The structure in its outward appearance reveals harmony of form, spatial clarity, and refinement of decorative details.

Italian art: The Annunciation by Fra’ Angelico

The Annunciation (1432-1434), is an extraordinary work of art composed by Fra Angelico (1400 ca. -1455), one of the most distinguished Italian painters of the 15th century. The scene, religious in nature, depicts the Archangel Gabriel’s announcement that Mary would conceive the son of God. Fra Angelico’s perfect and meticulous style shows us that every form is clear and realistic. The strong light used in the painting eliminates the shadows. Every color of the composition is bright and shimmering.

La Anunciación (1432-1434), es una extraordinaria obra de arte compuesta por Fra’ Angelico (1400 ca. -1455), uno de los pintores italianos más destacados del siglo XV. La escena, de carácter religioso, representa el anuncio del arcángel Gabriel de que María concebirá el hijo de Dios. El estilo perfecto y meticuloso de Fra’ Angelico nos muestra que cada forma es clara y realista. La fuerte luz utilizada en el panel elimina las sombras. Todos los colores de la composición son brillantes y resplandecientes.

L’Annunciazione (1432-1434) è una straordinaria opera d’arte composta da Fra’ Angelico (1400 ca.-1455), uno dei più illustri pittori italiani del XV secolo. La scena, di carattere religioso, raffigura l’annuncio dell’Arcangelo Gabriele che Maria concepirà il figlio di Dio. Lo stile perfetto e meticoloso di Fra’ Angelico ci mostra che ogni forma è chiara e realistica. La forte luce utilizzata elimina le ombre. Ogni colore della composizione risulta luminoso e scintillante.

Artista messicana: Frida Kahlo

Frida Khalo (1907-1954), artista messicana, è riconosciuta come una delle donne più importanti del Messico. È anche tra gli artisti del XX secolo più studiati e celebrati non solo dagli amanti dell’arte ma anche dai critici.

La sua vita fu piuttosto sfortunata e truculenta. Da bambina fu colpita dalla poliomielite che le causò deformazioni alla gamba destra. A causa della malattia fu costretta a trascorrere numerosi mesi a letto. Come se non bastasse, all’età di diciotto anni fu vittima di un grave incidente d’autobus che aggiunse traumi e grandi sofferenze alla sua vita. Sposò l’artista Diego Rivera. Anche la relazione tra i due non si rivelò eccellente.

Durante l’ospedalizzazione a casa, Frida iniziò a dipingere per passare il tempo. La sua passione la spinse a produrre numerosi dipinti, prevalentemente autoritratti, utilizzando se stessa come soggetto principale per esprimere la sua realtà interiore, la sua storia personale e le sue emozioni, come il suo tormento, il suo senso di isolamento e la sua ricerca di un significato più profondo della vita.

Su vida fue bastante desafortunada y truculenta. De niña sufrió poliomielitis que le causó deformidades en la pierna derecha. A causa de la enfermedad se vio obligada a pasar numerosos meses en cama. Por si fuera poco, a los dieciocho años fue víctima de un grave accidente de autobús que añadió traumas y grandes sufrimientos a su vida. Se casó con el artista Diego Rivera. La relación entre ambos tampoco resultó excelente.

Durante su hospitalización en casa, Frida empezó a pintar para pasar el tiempo. Su pasión la llevó a producir numerosos cuadros, predominantemente autorretratos, utilizándose a sí misma como tema principal para expresar su realidad interior, su historia personal y emociones como su tormento, su sensación de aislamiento y su búsqueda de un sentido más profundo de la vida.

Her life was rather unfortunate and truculent. As a child she was stricken with polio that caused deformities in her right leg. Because of the disease she was forced to spend numerous months in bed. As if that was not enough, at the age of eighteen she was the victim of a serious bus accident that added trauma and great suffering to her life. She married the artist Diego Rivera. The relationship between the two did not turn out to be excellent either.

During her hospitalization at home, Frida began to paint to help pass the time. Her passion drove her to produce numerous paintings, predominantly self-portraits, using herself as the main subject to express her inner reality, personal story and emotions such her torment, her sense of isolation, and her search for a deeper meaning in life.
