Boston Harbor came alive this weekend as the magnificent Tall Ships sailed into the city, transforming the waterfront into a celebration of history, culture, and international friendship. Watching these majestic vessels arrive is an unforgettable experience, but it is also a reminder that every ship carries more than sails and rigging—it carries the language, traditions, and stories of its people.

As a teacher of Italian, Spanish, and English as a Second Language (ESL), I couldn’t help but see this event as a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the beauty of languages and the cultures they represent.

🇮🇹 Italy: The Magnificent Amerigo Vespucci

Without question, one of the stars of the festival is the Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian Navy’s famous training ship, often described as “the most beautiful ship in the world.”

Built in 1931, the Amerigo Vespucci is far more than a sailing vessel. It serves as a floating academy where future naval officers learn discipline, leadership, teamwork, and respect for Italy’s rich maritime traditions.

Its inspiring motto,

“Non chi comincia ma quel che persevera”

(“Not he who begins, but he who perseveres”),

reminds us that success comes through dedication—a lesson that applies equally to learning a new language.

For anyone studying Italian, seeing the Amerigo Vespucci in person is an opportunity to experience a living symbol of Italy’s history, craftsmanship, and national pride.

🇪🇸 Spain: The Historic Juan Sebastián de Elcano

Also welcoming visitors to Boston is Spain’s renowned training ship, the Juan Sebastián de Elcano, named after the Spanish explorer who completed the first circumnavigation of the globe.

Like her Italian counterpart, she is a floating classroom where future naval officers develop professional skills while representing Spain throughout the world.

Often described as one of the most beautiful and untouched islands in the Mediterranean, Palmarola is a place where nature takes center stage. Its crystal-clear waters, dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and peaceful atmosphere create a landscape that feels almost like a dream.

Un dolce leggero, una tradizione profonda

Il Carnevale in Italia non è solo una festa: è uno stato d’animo. È il piacere di concedersi qualcosa di buono, di ritrovarsi, di sorridere insieme prima che il ritmo quotidiano riprenda il suo corso. Tra i dolci più iconici di questo periodo ci sono senza dubbio le chiacchiere di Carnevale: sottili, croccanti, leggere come l’aria e cariche di memoria.

Conosciute anche come frappe, bugie, cenci — a seconda della regione — le chiacchiere parlano una lingua comune: quella della tradizione italiana, semplice ma raffinata, fatta di pochi ingredienti e di grande attenzione al gesto.

Le chiacchiere non sono un dolce “pesante”. Sono delicate, profumate di limone o arancia, appena zuccherate, perfette da accompagnare a un caffè, a un vino dolce o a una conversazione lenta.

Per gli adulti, prepararle o gustarle è spesso un viaggio nel tempo: una cucina di famiglia, una nonna che stende l’impasto sottile, la tavola che si riempie senza fretta. Sono un dolce che invita a rallentare e a riscoprire il piacere delle cose semplici fatte bene.

Ogni anno, il 6 gennaio, gli italiani celebrano l’Epifania, una festività che ricorda la visita dei Tre Re Magi al Bambino Gesù. Conosciuta in Italia come La Befana, questa giornata è piena di tradizione, gioia e calore familiare, mantenendo viva una parte amata della cultura italiana sia in Italia che all’estero.

Per i bambini, l’Epifania è magica. Secondo la tradizione, La Befana, una figura simile a una gentile strega, vola sulla sua scopa portando regali e dolci ai bambini buoni, mentre quelli meno bravi potrebbero trovare solo un pezzo di carbone. 🎁🍬 Questa leggenda giocosa aggiunge meraviglia ed entusiasmo, creando ricordi che durano tutta la vita.

Oltre ai dolci e ai regali, l’Epifania è un’occasione per celebrare l’eredità e l’identità culturale italiana. Le famiglie spesso si riuniscono per gustare piatti tradizionali, come panettone, torrone e dolci festivi, e partecipano a parate locali o cerimonie religiose.
