English Literature: William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare (1564-1616). He is internationally known as the greatest English playwright, poet and actor of the XVII century.

Not much is known about his life in London. Shakespeare probably went to Stratford Grammar School, but he had no university education. In 1582, at the age of eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway, eight years older. They had three children. We do know, however, that by 1592 Shakespeare had become a well-known actor and one of the most famous dramatists in London. He acted at court and won the admiration of Queen Elizabeth I.

William Shakespeare left us numerous plays and sonnets. His masterpieces are being played all over the world. Some of his famous characters are Romeo and Juliet, Othello and Desdemona, Hamlet and Ophelia, Macbeth, King Lear, and Falstaff.
