The Spanish flag

The origin of the Spanish flag can be traced back to the naval insignia of the Kingdom of Spain (1785). It became official during the reign of Queen Isabella II.

The flag is composed of three horizontal stripes. The red color represents the blood of Spaniards shed during the wars. While the golden yellow represents the wealth won by the Spanish crown over the centuries. From its colors the flag is also called Rojigualda.

The coat of arms is divided into four quadrants, representing the four kingdoms: Castile, León, Senyera and Navarre, that united formed 15th century Spain. In the center is a fleur-de-lis to symbolize the royal house of Bourbon, while the sides depict the two Pillars of Hercules. Wrapped around the columns is the motto Plus Ultra, and above them we find the imperial crown on the left, and the royal crown on the one on the right, in addition to the crown over the entire coat of arms.
